PTZ in Skype and video is lost.

Post by Pedro » Fri Feb 14, 2014 3:19 am

Hi,
Just started using the program, with Skype
A couple of things...
1). The aspect ration in the Skype window is wrong.
It is correct in the SplitCam window.

2). When I activate the PTZ controls, the video (in Skype) goes black a few moments after moving the camera.
Not moving it seems ok, but once I hit a preset button (through an RS-232 interface), the camera positions itself correctly, then a few seconds later, black screen.
Once again, the video is fine in Splitcam, just not in Skype.
I have the latest ver. of Skype and I am trying the latest beta ver. of SplitCam, though the problem was also present in ver. 5.???
The camera is a Sony EVI-D70 and is running through a 'generic' USB tv-tuner stick.
Thanks!!

Hi Pedro,

Unfortunately we have not that camera for test in our lab. Now we can only offer you to set the last beta version from

Perhaps it solves some your problems.

Pedro,

Did you test your camera with the last beta splitcam?

Yes. I am using the latest beta ver. of your program. (6.6.2.8)
I had the same problem in the earlier ver. too (rev. 5.??)
The problem is actually not just restricted to panning, tilting or zooming of the camera.
It goes blank after a few seconds of enabling the video.
I have only tried this in skype, so far, but I will also try in VLC. and report back.

It seems very random. I get the video for either a few seconds or a few minutes.

How I am testing this:
I have two computers on my network and I am using Skype.
One computer has a Microsoft Lifecam, the other has the analog camera going through a tuner.
The video is lost from Skype in the tuner computer.
The video still plays in Splitcam though.

I will see how long the video lasts without moving the camera, since that was triggering the problem before, though, as I mentioned in the last post, it was dropped after a few seconds of connecting, WITHOUT moving the camera.

So the 1st time today I tried it, the video signal was lost after a few seconds.

The second time I tried it, the video was fine for 10 minutes, then I moved (via pan control) the camera and within 20 secs. the video is lost.

The third time I tried it, the video was lost after a few minutes.

So the PTZ may influence the video loss, but it is lost without it's operation too.
Continuing to test...

So I tried agian and this time I had the video stream open in another player (AMCap.exe) at the same time as Skype.
When I lost the video in Skype, the video was ok in both SplitCam and AMCap, so only Skype is losing the video.
No PTZ is being used at this point, as I want to keep things simple while I test!

Further testing:
I have tried 2 different cameras and 2 different USB tuners.
The results are the same: after a few minutes, sometimes seconds, video is lost.

The 2nd camera is a 'generic' 640x480 analog camera.
The 2nd tuner is an ATI750 USB:

This tuner will only display video (in Skype) for a few seconds, before blanking!

Well, looks like I'm a-ok now!
Not only is the camera not blanking out, I am also getting Skype to show the video in the correct aspect ratio.

I knew that the problem was system related, because I was able to test with various cameras & tuner sticks.
When the problem existed with a 'regular' usb webcam, I suspected a system problem.

So then I tried Splitcam with a totally different computer, with a Lifecam webcam and it was good.
I went back to the old computer and did a system restore to a 'good' point about 2 months ago!
That has fixed the problem and I am now rocking a PTZ conference camera in Skype!!

Hi Pedro,

thank you for the detail report.

From it I understood that problem was in system of your PC. After back to "2 months point restoring" of OS the problem went away. Is it true?

I also would like to know - what did you set in Video settings for skype: SplitCam Video Driver or SplitCam Video Filter?

Yes true.

I am using the latest vers. (6.6.2.8).

I was not sure which to select, so I chose : "SplitCam Video Driver"

What is the "SplitCam Video Filter" for?
Thanks.

This is the same thing as SplitCam Video Driver.

You can capture your video using one of two methods:
- SplitCam Video Filter (video capture by SplitCam DirectShow filter in user mode )
- SplitCam Video Driver (video capture by SplitCam driver in kenel mode )

I like SplitCam Video Filter, because I get better result, than for SplitCam Video Driver in Skype.
Plus, SplitCam Video Driver is not accessible for Win XP.

Thank you for help in test,
Victor
